From the 20th March to 23rd April Tong-Len has been distributing food to the slum people. For the first few days it was only possible to help those families in most urgent need – they received cooked food from our nursery tent. Thanks to donations into our emergency fund, from 26th March onwards we were able to provide every family in the slum with rice, flour, dhal, oil, sugar, tea, milk, curd and vegetables including tomatoes, onions and potatoes. About 2000 people at risk of starvation received food. In addition, Tong-Len has been providing basic health care including monitoring the communities for signs of COVID 19. There are a number of health issues but so far none of the people in the slum are considered COVID 19 victims. However, tests are not yet available.
